Nutrition Awareness Month

March is Nutrition Awareness Month, a time to focus on the importance of making informed food choices and developing healthy eating habits. Good nutrition is crucial for overall health and well-being, playing a key role in preventing chronic diseases and promoting longevity.

Nutrition is the process by which our bodies take in and use food for growth, repair, and maintenance. A balanced diet provides the macronutrients and micronutrients necessary for optimal health. This includes vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. Each of these nutrients plays a unique role in the body.  Deficiencies can lead to a range of health problems.

A healthy diet should include a variety of foods from all food groups. The USDA’s MyPlate provides a helpful visual guide for building a healthy plate:

Fruits: Focus on whole fruits rather than fruit juices. While making fruit juices, we remove the skin of the fruits which are high in vitamins and other nutrients.

Vegetables: Choose a variety of colors and types

Grains: Make at least half your grains whole grains.

Protein: Include a variety of protein sources such as lean meats, poultry, seafood, beans, peas, nuts, and seeds.

Dairy: Choose a low-fat or fat-free dairy products. The Dairy Group includes milk, yogurt, cheese, lactose-free milk and fortified soymilk and yogurt.

The Role of Macronutrients

Carbohydrates: These are the body’s primary source of energy and should make up about 45-65% of your daily calories. Choose complex carbohydrates like whole grains, fruits, and vegetables.

Proteins: Proteins are essential for building and repairing tissues and are crucial component of enzymes, hormones, and antibodies. Aim for a variety of protein sources, including lean meats, poultry, fish, beans, nuts, and seeds.

Fats: Fat supports many of your body’s functions such as vitamin and mineral absorption, blood clotting, building cells, and muscle movement. According to the World Health Organization, total fat should not exceed 30% of total energy intake.

Micronutrients and Phytochemicals

In addition to macronutrients, our bodies need a variety of vitamins and minerals to function properly. These micronutrients play essential roles in processes like metabolism, immune function, and bone health. Phytochemicals, found in plant foods, have been shown to have various health benefits, including antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

Making Healthy Choices

Making healthy food choices doesn’t have to be complicated. Start by incorporating more whole foods into your diet and limiting processed foods high in added sugars unhealthy fats, and sodium. Also, be mindful of portion sizes and listen to your body’s hunger and fullness cues.

The Importance of Hydration

Hydration is also an essential aspect of nutrition. Water is crucial for digestion, nutrient absorption, and the regulation of body temperature. Aim to drink plenty of water throughout the day and limit sugary beverages. Try and drink 8 glasses of water throughout the day.

Nutrition is a cornerstone of good health, and making informed food choices can have a profound impact on your well-being. This Nutrition Awareness Month, take the time to evaluate your diet and make small changes that can lead to long-term health benefits. By prioritizing nutrition, you can unlock the power of food and take control of your health and vitality.
