Detective Sergeant John McKinney obtained his Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Colby College (Waterville, ME) in 2011 and his Master of Science in Counterterrorism and National Security Affairs from Nova Southeastern University (Davie, FL) in 2019. He began his career in law enforcement with the Coconut Creek Police Department in 2013 as a patrol officer. In 2016, he was selected as a field training officer and also joined the department’s Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Team. Since joining the SWAT team, he has held the positions of operator, sniper, assistant team leader, and team leader (current). In 2017, he was promoted to Detective with the department’s Special Enforcement Team (SET), where he served for four years. In 2021, he was promoted to Sergeant and assigned to Patrol Team 3. In January of 2022, he was selected to be one of two Detective Sergeants in the Criminal Investigations Section. The following year, in 2023, he moved over to supervise SET.
